Hand Pool vs Regular Pool: What Changes When You Play With Your Bare Hand
October 16, 2026

Hand pool billiards uses the exact same table and balls as the game you already know, so most of your pool brain still works. A few things change, and they change a lot.
Equipment: down to zero
Regular pool depends on extra gear like chalk, gloves or a bridge. Hand pool needs none of it. Your dominant hand does the work, palm on the felt and fingers spread.
Jump shots: anything goes
In regular pool a jump shot takes a special technique and is often restricted. In hand pool you can pick up the white ball and toss it over a blocker. It's legal and there's no limit.
Scratches hurt less
A scratch in hand pool, table scratches included, simply hands your opponent ball-in-hand. You never lose on one. Scratching on the 8 is a tie, unless you ran two balls in a row and the 8 was your last ball, which makes it a win.
The table is part of the court
No one-foot-on-the-floor rule exists in hand pool. If the shot means climbing up, climb up.
What stays the same
You still rack in a triangle, call your shots and try to clear your group before the 8. Position play matters as much as ever. Full rules are at HandPool.com.
